Converting FAT32 to NTFSWindows Vista demands an NTFS-formatted partition for itself. But what if you have used FAT32 for your Windows XP machine, and now you want to upgrade to Vista? Do you need to reformat your hard disk and loose all your information? Fortunately, Windows NT, 2000, XP have a small tool in the distribution package. It is called 'convert', and its single task is converting FAT32 volumes into NTFS without loosing data. If you are running one of these systems, open command prompt and type: convert X:/fs:ntfs The big 'X' in our example should be replaced with the actual letter of the volume that you want to convert to NTFS. You will need to restart your system to complete the process. All your information will be preserved, and the whole process will take only a few minutes (including the restart). The tool is capable of converting both FAT (older) and FAT32 partitions. After converting you will be able to upgrade to Vista.
